The first sentence in our study this week was: “The operations of the mind are produced by two parallel modes of activity…one conscious and other sub-conscious.”
I’ve always known of each and that they are responsible for very different aspects of our “thinking.” What was wonderful this week was exploring those differences in greater detail. Understanding the differences and how to leverage them collectively is key to optimizing your success. Following are snippets from the lesson. Consider the distinctions…
The conscious mind, or objective mind, is reasoning will. It is outward focused, changeable and facilitates our ability to walk at will, raise our arms when we choose to and give our attention through sight and hearing to any subject we please. It has the ability to discriminate, make choices, and reason. It is also uniquely positioned to influence, rule, and guard the subconscious mind.
The conscious mind is what we most commonly refer to when we talk about our mental capabilities. It is the “intelligence” what we test in school, are interviewed for on the job, and what we connect with in the world using our five senses. With it we can do amazing things.
The subconscious mind, or subjective mind by contrast, is instinctive desire, and is inward focused. It manages the regular functions which make physical life possible i.e. keeps our heart beating, our blood circulating, and our growth, nerves and muscle tissue doing what they were designed to do as well as managing other vital processes.
It operates in a majestic, rhythmic manner, subject to no vacillation, but constant at every moment. This is certainly something we want when it comes to our vital functions.
Further the subconscious inspires us; warns us; furnishes us with names, facts and scenes from the storehouse of memory. It directs our thoughts, tastes, and accomplishes tasks so intricate that no conscious mind has the capacity for.
One of my favorite understandings of the power of the subconscious mind is the fact that the subconscious mind does not engage in the process of proving. It does not know the difference between what is real and what is fake. Drama or shock that occurs in a movie impacts the subconscious mind as though it is real life. It is your conscious mind that says, “chill out, it’s only a movie.” The subconscious mind relies upon the conscious mind, to guard it from harmful ideas, mistaken impressions — mental stimulation or triggers that can lead to unwanted results. Alternately, it looks to the conscious mind to provide the ideas and visions — mental stimulation that when manifested would be our desired outcome. When the conscious mind leverages the power of the the subconscious mind, the possibilities are beyond our imagination. Just think about that…
